We have been playing computer games for decades, although we do not really take into account how much time and effort has gone into making these games. I think we should take time to have a look at and give credit to the top 4 computer game characters, which have artistically been drawn up and brought to life.

Mario
Created by Shigeru Miyamoto, there\'s not really much to say about Mario except that he is one of the all time legends of the computer gaming industry. Since Mario\'s creation, he has appeared in more than 200 games, not to mention movies and cartoons. He is a full blown household name. The history of Mario dates back to 1981 when he first appeared in Donkey Kong. He then became an independent in 1983 with the release of Mario Bros. His visual appearance has remained the same over these years and the real action occurred when he was brought to 3D life in Super Mario 64.

Luigi
The younger brother of Mario was another great character and has made his way both as doubling up with Mario and going independently. This character was designed the same as Mario except for that he was slightly taller, slimmer and greener. He first made his appearance in 1983 in Super Mario Bros and this then has appeared in numerous smash hit games including Luigi\'s Mansion.

Sonic
Sonic is another major character that has always been hot on Mario\'s heels, Sega were looking for a great character to run as there mascot, and came up with several different designs, which included an armadillo and a dog. But in the end they decided to choose the hedgehog, over recent years there has not been a major change in Sonics image design apart from making him a bit taller and his spikes a bit longer.

Donkey Kong
Again created by Shigeru Miyamoto himself donkey Kong was one of the first characters to hit out consoles. His design was that of an ape and caught the public\'s imagination instantly. He has appeared in numerous games as well as an episode of futurama.

These characters have all been major successes and that is mainly due down to the fact of how they were designed. Whilst playing with these characters, even if the game was boring, they had the ability to catch your imagination, which is why they are still around. There have been others such as Zelda but I believe these four characters are right at the top of the pile.
