Nothing can be worse than finally clearing up an acne problem and finding yourself dealing with permanent scars as a harsh reminder of the acne that troubled you for so long. If you are one of the unlucky ones who did not escape unscathed, you should know that acne scar removal could be a possibility for you.

What are Acne Scars?
Scars are a permanent change to the skin produced by the healing process. Fibrous tissue forms when white blood cells fight off bacteria and cause changes in the skin cells. They don\'t always stay under the surface.

Ice pick scars are small holes in the surface of the skin. The name of the scar says it all -- they look like ice pick holes. These are usually too deep to be taken care of with resurfacing or surface dermabrasion.

Keloid scars are the most obvious and the most painful. These scars spread out from the original acne site. They are caused by the overproduction of collagen. They are usually light to dark pink in color.

The \"boxcar\" scars are flatter on the bottom and do not normally go as deep as ice pick scars. Laser resurfacing or dermabrasion often takes care of boxcar scars.

The Removal of Acne Scars
* Dermabrasion - Dermabrasion can often remove moderate acne scarring from the surface of the skin. First, an anesthetic is used and then the dermatologist takes a high-speed brush and moves it across your face, effectively taking off layers of your skin. When your skin regenerates, the scars are usually gone and when they are not gone, their appearance is much less obvious. Another kind of dermabrasion is microdermabrasion. This is often less effective than dermabrasion but is also less invasive.

* Laser treatments - CO2 lasers can remove some of the tissue from the scars and can be targeted to the specific trouble areas. Many times a single treatment will do the job. Redness, burning and itching may be felt for weeks after getting the treatment.

* Surgery - Surgery to get rid of scars often includes sutures or skin grafts and is useful as a removal tool for some ice pick scars.

* Drugs - Keloids do not respond well to dermabrasion, laser treatments or surgery. Sometimes topical solutions with retinoid may be used or steroidal drugs can be injected into skin around the scar. Keep in mind that results vary.

OTC Treatments for Acne Scar Removal
Though there are no over-the-counter treatments for acne scar removal, there are several promising treatments that will help reduce the appearance of scars. If you are affected by acne scars, these treatments may well be worth a try.
