As winter is soon to be upon us, we have less time to keep up with gardening and looking after our plants, this in fact being because of two reasons, the first it being too cold for people to work and the second is that it gets darker a lot sooner, so usually by the time you have finished your day job it is pitch black.
But this being said you should get ready to keep your garden pests under control, as they could wreak havoc if not maintained. There are some garden pests who love the winter; one example of them would be slugs, in the October months you can find them breeding quite rapidly. We will now take a look at a few other pests, which in fact could populate your garden and damage the growth.
Firstly we will take a look at the leaf miner; this insect can be seen on foliage, on what appears to be like white chain blisters. To eliminate these you should remove the infested foliage and get rid of it to eliminate the spread.
Next you have the ever so hidden spittle bug, what these tend to do is conceal there selves under a white foam on the surface of new stems, and wait for the first light of spring to approach. You should eliminate these as soon as you notice them; basically, all you need to do is spray some water around them to release them from the plant.
We also have the dreaded rose scales, these insects in essence hide under gray scales, usually found in the old plant stems and they feed themselves by sucking the sap and weakening the plant. You could try removing them with your fingernails, but more often they need to be sprayed with some acephate.
Finally we have the Japanese beetle, these do damage your plants by eating some of the foliage, and to eliminate them you should again firstly try picking them with your hand and if that does not work, then you could try also spraying them with some acephate.
There are plenty more garden pests that roam around in the winter, but what you should remember, is to eliminate them as soon as they occur, so that they do not spread and damage your plants. If you are having trouble eliminating them by natural methods, you could turn to chemical pesticides, which tend to work wonders in eliminating the hard to rid pests.
