There is nothing like going to your vacation home and having so much to do that you don’t feel like you’re on vacation. If you can not afford to be waited on hand and foot, you want your vacation home to at least have the latest gadgets that only require the push of a button or two. Everywhere you sit you should feel like you could go to sleep. No, you won't sleep all the time, but you may read, have a glass of wine or just look at the sunset. Your bathing experience should be luxurious and your outdoor setting should feel like paradise.
Your vacation home should say a lot about your creative side. Don’t worry, everybody has a creative side. Just use your imagination. Even if you are a tech geek, your home should have even more gadgets that display your style. Some homes now have a wall with a moving scene. Many of us can’t afford to be directly located on the beach; although we can wake up on the beach everyday with our electrical wall scene.
Ask yourself what makes you relaxed. What are some of the things you like to have around you? Where is your favorite spot in the house? Create a menagerie of objects from your travels for display in a cupboard or curio. What is your hobby? Is there a designated space for your hobby in your vacation home?
Most writers like to have a beach or mountain retreat they can go to for inspiration. If there is a place outside where you’re most inspired, that place should be comfortable. A couple of Adirondack chairs on a deck overlooking the ocean will serve a beachcomber well when it’s time to get that outdoor inspiration. Those same Adirondack chairs will serve the mountaineer well on an observation deck when it’s time to write.
There should not be too many communication gadgets around when at your vacation home. Televisions in the bedroom are even more detrimental than they are at your year round home. A landline or cell phone is a personal choice, but are they both necessary while on vacation? Music is essential wherever you are. Whatever type of music you like should be accessible when on vacation. Light music soothes the soul.
Whether you cook or order take out, eat alone or with your partner and/or friends, you should have all the conveniences needed at your vacation home. Kitchen appliances should be gadgets of convenience. I should reiterate here for the electronically challenged, no more than one or two buttons.
The last thing I would like to stress is the importance of getting everything you need in one trip. You might typically go to the store several times a week. You might have to stop here for gas and there for dry cleaning. You want your to do list done before you settle in your vacation nest. The longer you stay the more you may need but remember you’re on vacation…there to relax.
